A small community journeyed across the sea seeking prospective business in the most unimaginable land, Burma as it was unknown.
who braving turbulence leaving the women at home hundreds of them set sail taking their grown up sons along with barbers, cooks and dhobis to help them in chores.
Setting business in a land
unknown,unable to understand
the language, amidst unfamiliar people
being a task, they transacted
business with phenomenal
success.
Enthused by their achievements
many more followed them
together they deviated from banking
to plantation, cultivation trading .
They spread all over Burma.
Came to be known as Chetty bankers.
Burma made a mark in the world map.
The Chettys deployed the gains
in establishing schools,
building temples dedicated
to Lord Muruga. Transferred
part of their profits to the family
and built palatial homes.
The golden period of Burma
came to an end when Japan
set foot on the soil. The Chettys
fled home leaving everything
lands, business, connections
with only a loin cloth to cover
them. Burma came under military regime
Disillusioned for a while
the enterprising community
made good of their savings
commenced business by selling
valuables and properties
in their own country.
The next generation
honed their skill.Education
took them to places. They
found jobs in United States,
Europe and Singapore.
A reward for
‘the undaunted spirit.
Like a phoenix
the Chettys have
regained their prosperity.
Continue their charity
wherever they are,
I think of those days
when I used to jump,
up go my legs in motion
through the air without friction
they touche the ground
violent as a storm.
I visualize the past years
when I worked hard
my head plunged headlong
involved in every activity
one of indulgence
being a coveted asset.
At present I contradict
what I had been
my legs find hard to move
wobble and stagger as I
walk through the flat terrain
I am a poor counterfeit of the original.
Away from the crowd, at this juncture
I turn lazy and live a life lethargic
the brain, at the helm commands
the body remains indolent,
a strained coordination
disturbs the equanimity,
That goes with the age
youth has forsaken me
infirmity embraces
a transition in a kind
distracts and detracts
resignation rescues
Magic like it appears
the brown garden,
with plants half dried
leaves with yellowish hue
thin stems,trees look
weird, bear fruits
without any substantial
flesh, grass seems
like hay,has turned
green.
It is joy to see.
The rounded plants
with shoots of flowers.
leaves in shiny green,
trees are heavy
with lascivious fruits.
grass emulates a gleam
non pareil. The infusion
extends an enchantment,
being a grace.
Looking heavenwards ,
I notice the dark clouds
staying still, ready to come
down as rain. Being the
period of North East monsoon,
the rainfall had been exceptional.
Failure of the rains led
to a pessimistic feel, a kind of
nothingness, Reinforced with
copious rains hope is
around the corner.
Bales of cotton,
cones of yarn
of weft and warp
the varieties of cotton
too many, long staple
and short staple,
superior and inferior,
the yarn in counts
20’s up to 100’s ,
twisted, blended,
all being put
in bay, workers
laid off, factory sheds
lie vacant a stress
on the whole
the affectations
penetrate deep
a dismal context
hard to reconcile.
