Divine Float.


The celestial couple Lord Subramania and his escort Deivanai had an outing in the Theppam of Thiruparangkundram.

The couple were decked in glittering jewellery,and clothed in colourful Kanchipuram silk.The water body or Theppam was lit with diyas. There was a display of fireworks,which added charm to the float.

The Nagarathar community of Tamilnadu hosted this divine festival. Prasadams were distributed to the devotees from the Nagarathar choultry.Nattukottai Chettiars ,otherwise called as Nagarathars,are known for their generous contribution to the temples.

The float was a beautiful event. The Divine consorts were kept in the float,with the Nagarathar community heads ,the chair person of the temple and the archakas,all getting into the make shift float.The temporary structure of the float looked  archaic , uneven and appeared little risky. The authorities of the temple have to get into the details and modify the float ,to suit the modern times . The risk factor should be eliminated. If any untoward incident  happens , it will  not augur well.

The couple were taken to the central mandapam. They went through three pradishnams . Then they were placed in the oonjal or swing.

 The temple singer or odhuvar sang hymns in praise of Lord ,followed by the recital of the temple Nadashwara vidwans. The singing and the music played by the vidwans were so enchanting and a treat to the ears and a solace to the mind. Aarathis were taken and the final poornaathi was performed amidst the chanting of Murga, Murga, Murga . The crowd  became ecstatic . The devotees were enthralled.  Sublimity took control of the scenario. After going through the Theppam thrice, the float came to  a grand halt.

It was an austere celebration devoid of ostentation. It was a grandeur  without artificial distinction. It was  celestial denouement filled with purity and devotion.

Diffused in Music


 I placed myself , in a most vantage position, away from my telephone, from my PC and range bound from my domestic staff.

I dug through my collection of CD’s . I took out my favourite Kriti, ‘nannupalimpa ‘rendered by Maharajapuram Santhanam.

Mohanam, is the key raga , the property of the Maharajapuram school.

Raga Mohanam  is an alluring . an enchanting,and an enticing beauty

Listening to the particular  rendition, I got intoxicated and bewitched.

 Thiagaraja ,was in the midst of his daughter’s marriage. The rituals were taking place. The saint was little  distracted. as his eyes were looking at the Cauvery river ,which was majestically flowing,, He was eagerly waiting for his disciple Venkataramana Bhaghavathar.He got worried. He could not participate in the ceremonies whole heartedly.His mind became restless.Then, as though it was an apparition, he saw Venkataramana Bhagavathar wading through the deep waters, carrying aloft the idol of Sri Rama.

Tyagaraja,in ecstasy sang the kriti “nanupalimpa. nadachivachitivo”.

He saw, Lord Rama, striding imperiously, negotiating the fluent flow of Cauvery, and entering the wedding pandal.To him ,there was no sign of anything tangible. The bridal pair, the relatives, his prime disciple, all  submerged into Sri Rama. He saw the Lordeverywhere, in every face.

He cried  Rama, Rama,in deep bhakthi.He felt that  SriRama had descended from Heaven , to bless his daughter, in response to his invitation.Tyagaraja  ,extolled.,Lord Rama’s coutesy as he  had condescended to grace the occassion,a blessing unexpected, unheard and unimaginable

 As Tyagaraja felt the Divine Presence.,I experienced the same stimulating sentiment ,while I listened to this beautiful song.. I was enthralled , exhilarated and lost myself in reverie 

Oh ! Rama ,transcribe the most exquisite of all  emotions, translate the most lovable of all experiences, and transcend the most celestial of all beings.

I see Sri Rama alone.

Thirukarthigai.


Karthigai , is the festival of lights ,in South India.

This ritual centres around Lord Subramania.

Thiruvannamlai, the abode of God Arunachaleswar, is the cynosure of all eyes , during the Karthigai rejoicement.A gigantic depam is lit , and the Lord is taken in a procession,around the hills.

It is called as Thiruvannamali deepam.

Millions gather to watch this colourful  ceremony.

The air reverberates with the frenzied cry  of  the devotees, as they  hail Arunachaleswara.

.Almost in all temples throughout South India , akal deepams are lit,and chokappaan is burnt, pointing to  fire, which constitutes one of the five  elements of life

.Ladies offer prayers at home, and decorate their  houses with eye catching kolams and deeyas

The   entire house is spruced up.right from the basement to the attic . 

 Old , unusable and unwanted things  are  brougt down and disposed  by setting them ablaze. 

This practice,  is an obeisance to fire, which constitutes one of the five  elements of life.

 This large scale illumination  denotes that the  external light reflects the inner self   It is a metaphorical allusion to Wisdom  which radiates the mind,and  compassion which extolls the soul .

Invocation to Saraswathi.


Saraswathi namas thubiyam,

varathe kama roopini.

vidyarambam krishyam.

sidhir bavathume sadha.

Today is Saraswathi pooja.

Saraswathi is Goddess of knoweldge.

Hindus offer prayers to Saraswathi.

Factories ,and the work force celebrate this event with ardent fervour.

The machines are cleaned, greased and the  building is spruced up .

Workers gather in the morning.

Poojas are conducted .

Prasadams are distributed.

A perfect understanding develops between the employer and employee.

The workers disperse with less strain and more gaiety,mostly unusual during week days.

A similar trend  goes on in Offices, Banks, more so in all institutions ,whatsoever.

 In the Temples  music recitals are held.

The people enjoy  grace and divinity in the same platform.

Abishekams, and exclusive chanting of slokas are held to honour Saraswathi.

Domestic reverberations  include singing songs in praise of the Goddess.

All gadgets,cars, two wheelers, refrigerators, stove, mixie, grinder, Television. Computers, washing machine,telephones, what not and what else, are wiped  with such vigour, so that they look anew.

They are smeared with sandal paste and kumkum, and flowers are decked on them.

The pooja is performed by the family head.

Coconuts, banana, betel leaves, rice pori  and other savouries like sundal , vadai are offered to Goddess.

 Lamps are lit.Aarathi is taken,

The family ,then partakes the food prepared with care and love.

Neighbours exchange their snacks and pass on pleasantries to each other.

Hindus  appease the Goddess in a grand style.

Saraswathi reciprocates  by blessing her devotees with wisdom.

It is mirth and beatitude in one stroke

It may sound epicurean to the aliens.

It may represent an expression, intangible to many.

It may reflect an image ,elusive to most.

It may appear like a depiction, alienated from reality.

To the Hindus, 

It is a the wholesome faith, that is transpired

It is the piety that is transcribed.

It is the devotion that is elaborated,

It is the trance that is experienced.

It is transcendental,celestial and divine.

it is an experience, which cannot be defined.

Trance  may sound abstract.

In real terms.

It is an exuberant exhilaration

Sree Saraswthu namosthuthe,sings Dhikshitar, one of the trinities of Carnatic music,extolling the Goddess of Wisdom.

 Let  us join him.

My obeisance to you,  Mother of  learning.
