My Mother’s Kitchen

“Homemade food is the best.”
a lesson taught by mother
remains strong in my mind.

She had a retinue of cooks
who prepared all she wanted,
especially, what all her children demanded.

Her kitchen was evenly poised.
Quantity and quality juxtaposed.

She trained her cooks, sent them to cookery classes,
read out to them the recipes.
Her kitchen was a laboratory,
a venue where different cuisines took shape
The paniyarams, chutneys and puliyodharai
notwithstanding the samosas and the salads
were made with diligence. The aroma filled the kitchen.
Traditional ones were improvised.
Colours were worked out with skill.

Eggs could never make a foray into her kitchen,
she being a born vegetarian. Eggless cakes
were baked. They were such a delight to us, the kids.

Born in such an environment, I too stick to the old rule.
It continues unknowingly,
passed on to my children as well.

Not fortunate like Mom, I managed the show
with a single cook. Tutored him from the basics.
He mastered the culinary expertise in earnest.
He is a stellar performer.
He is the chef in the sophisticated
“The Oberoi” in New Delhi.
My kitchen is back to me with all its strength.
I slog and scour, day in and day out,
being a lover of tasty food
and a stickler for cleanliness.

The Messy I am —A Disaster

it is the morning

the sun rises in the east

well, You would be knowing

I sprinkle water first

mixed with cow dung

around my porch  effusively

the odour begins now  with the dung

ithe inmates would find it  repulsive

but I, for one, go by tradition

on the green coloured patch

a kolam is done as a rendition

the powder is made out of rice

a pleasant smell adds up to the charm

My morning chores call me loud

meantime,  I rub my hair with gingelly oil

heated with  garlic and pepper

a mild pungent smell emanates

with the oil in my head

I grate the coconut and chop  the onion

add a pinch of asafoetida

I prepare the morning chutney

an aroma fills the air

it is so lively and appealing to me

you would think I am crazy

as you sniff and sneeze through

I rush to take my bath

apply shikakai  profusely over my head

turn the shower setting it to warm

a luxurious bath I undertake

much to your chagrin  and fury

while the house is wrapped with this odour

I come out  to dry my hair with the fumes

coming out from the burning cinders

that flare up with the sambrani  powder

the white fumes come up in circles

a faint pleasant smell to me in the go

the house now smells different

then I march into my kitchen

again to  the  onions, garlic and ginger

the dhal  and vegetables, tamarind  and curd

all combine together  in proportions

let out a mixed smell on the whole

my chimney extracts the most

certain times it  overworks

and fails to do a perfect job

all the food prepared  is packed

the remains dumped in the refrigerator

another treasure house of the  odour

the vessels are left to be washed

they release a  smell   offensive

as they lie there for hours

waiting for the arrival of the maid

the odour builds up  gradually

the atoms and the neutrons combine

the kitchen becomes  stuffy

I myself could not tolerate

I just close the kitchen door

throw open all the windows in the house

keep the main door wide open

.and sit waiting for my maid

I am happy , happier and happiest

to see  her come in

at last she is there

My maid comes in a hurry

opens the back door  with a heavy push

and in half an hour time cleans the vessels

dries them and arranges them in the shelf

dusts and sweeps the kitchen

washes the floor with  the cleansing liquid

the stove and the walls are wiped smooth

she attend to the washhng area with a dedication

never she is  miserly in the usage of water

it is I who think about water

as we have acute water shortage

she scrubs and mops the area  forcefully

the kitchen appears pretty smart and lovely

next she enters the main living are

sweeps and mops the floor

removes the dust and cob webs that hang around

does it so meticulously with care   and ease

as I sit there watching her

with an open mouth

my jaws open out in aghast

as to the mess I have confirmed

and the cleanliness my maid has affirmed

The Cook’s Delight.

The chip chop in the kitchen

with the cook getting on the run

he always in a hurry

as if some one is ravenously hungry

or be a school going kid  preparing to get ready

wanting his breakfast on the table

or be so an executive running g high

as time is flying in a  speed

with the breakfast getting late

with no such identity in the vicinity

the cook turns frantic in the early morn

pulling the knives from their place

banging the pans with a sound

cutting the onions in speed

while som fall down unable to cope

he shrieks and murmurs himself

chiding the onions for having slipped

and scolding the carrots for being too thick

as the milk vendor comes in with a whistle

the cook’s next human target

who shouts at him at the top of his voice

crying that  his morning tea has been delayed

running to the stove to place the kettle

doing all this with a precipitation

for no reason what soever

as the master of the house is in the patio

reading the morning newspaper

and who has not the habit of sipping the  tea

as he  breaks his fast daily

after taking his morning bath

well over nine in the morning

the cook wanting to finish the day work

wishing BrentPassto chit-chat with the staff

who turn up for duty at nine in thee morning.

What a show it is every morn

a drama in real life seen without a penny.

The Heart Is In The kitchen

kitchenA house needs an active kitchen
catering to the members demands
all other things become subsidiary
as limousines and furnitures going behind
There being not a great necessity
holding big cars on the drive
and exquisite decorations inside
the kitchen takes a role on the move
with it being fully equipped
not the gadgets modern that go into
but also the utensils age-old that add
with the provisions of quality well stocked
along with the combustion getting on without break
as in countries like India there goes a scarcity
and stocking the fuel is an offence
maintaining the fuel through the burn
either be gas or electricity prudent
above all being efficient in cooking
adds to the validity and reference
as the household could rely on tasteful
and healthy cooking without any forgiving
as this would turn against the intention
redeeming the thought of going out for dining.
Say almost that the kitchen takes the heart of the house
with all means and by all things,

Breaking The Fast

The morning was pleasant
With the newspapers in one hand
and with a phone on the other hand
woke up to the world’s call
of news from all parts to read
of information from the family to heed.
The time for breakfast was moving on
with nothing in way of preparation.
ran to the kitchen dry
to work on a dish of deep fry
which came out with a fine taste
sat down to eat it with no haste
winding up with a cup of hot teatea
