Well Above All

A child shunned by family,

Ranked  well above all.

 A child  deprived of  wealth,

Strode  well above all.

 A child exiled from  home,

Returned  well above all.

 A child denied  of rights

 Legitimised well above all.

 A child iintrigued by taunts,

Glistened  well above all

 A child reduced by rivalry,

Competed  well above all.

 A child deformed by prejudice,

Rationalised well above all.

 A child shattered by indifference,

 Distinguished   well above all

 A child sheared by tantrums,

Radiated  well above all.

A child tarnished by ill will,

Rejuvenated  well above all

 A child embraced by God,

Extolled  well above all.

Bonus

Bonus is bounty in Latin.

It is something extra  given or paid in addition to what is usually expected.

This is how the Dictionaries define the word.

It is a disbursal of the profit or rather sharing the excess.

Merill Lynch chief executive,  John Thain, demands 10 million dollars as bonus for the year 2008.

The company has made a loss of 11 billion dollars.

Most of the employees face retrenchment.

The share value has gone down by 73%.

Bonus , makes good sense. It is a progressive practice. Rewarding, the employees for their prowess. and for their hard work is a right predilection.

But the demand by Thain ,lacks moral debenture.

Merrill Lynch , will come under Bank Of America., and cease to exist as an independent company..

Thain , entered the scene when the going was dismal, had pushed the brand, kept the company alive, and restrained its bankruptcy by negotiating with Bank of America.

He  has received heavy pay  for his work.

His tall claim  seems atrocious. It is comparable to  the act of seizing  whatever you can from a burning house.

Thain ,however much an efficient executive , defies   justice, deputes greed, deforms economy, denies sense and defers idealism.

Thain has dwarfed himself.

Face the music

‘If music be the food of love ,then play on, give me the excess of it’ bids Duke  Orsino, in Shakespeare”s, Twelfth Night.

Excess of anything , be it music , food, drink , money ,love,  prompts sickness.

The appetite gets surfeited, the interest disappears, the love wanes, and the  glamour fades.

The global economy is   facing a turbulence.

There is unpredicted sullenness, unprecedented stiffness and unlamented sorrow.

Governments world over , are trying to pull the broken ,badly beaten economy , by providing rescue programmes.

 A resurrection  is much expected.

But , it is not going to happen.

The markets are waxing and waning like the Moon.

We have to face the music.

Abstinence

Intelligence,Love, and piety formulate the human mind.

The refinement of the individual depends on education, and the restraint from spurious drinks, cigars, and meat and poultry products.

The  Tamil poet , Thayumanavar, eludes such withdrawal in his poems, by saying, killing of animals for food is a detested practice and the uplift of mortals  will be enhanced by  abstaining from such habits.

The growth of the mind, the progress of  skills, the promotion of love and the elevation of the soul, are the outcome of  the absolute refrainment of non killing, and nonconsumption  of  animal products.

This has been vociferously endorsed by Thiruvalluvar and Ramalinga adigal.

The two  essential dharmas that  mankind have to inculcate are,

1.Non killing.

2.Refraining from eating animal flesh.

One can assimilate knowledge, achieve power, earn money, but the ultimate salvation , the nirvana or enlightenment is the outcome of abstinence.

This quality raises Man.

The ordinary becomes extraordinary, the simple becomes special, the mortal becomes celestial, the Man becomes a Saint.

Intelligent Eccentricity.

The title will send the head whirling.

What does this odd combination of words interpret.?

This  fusion of  seemingly unrelated words is called an oxymoron.

Intelligence can be defined as superior power of mind.

Eccentricity connotes a whimsical behaviour.

The mixture of   wisdom and  unconventionality,. may appear strange in the apparent procedure, but they coexist in reality.

Many examples  can be cited to prove this hypothesis.

A ferociously intelligent person , another oxymoron is jutting in,will make life unlivable.

His penetrating mind will percolate to the basics, will make an incisive research of  the human frenzies. will make a mockery of the frailties, and try to fish  from a dried pond.

He will think the unthinkable, worry unnecessarily, make others jittery, predict  unheard equations, draw unseemlier parallels., formulate unrealistic theorems.and attempt to hunt in a barren land.

Many a man revel in such eccentric behaviour,  transforming a sprightly ,ebullient  life into a  risk  prone enigma.

An Uneasy Calm

The euphoria is lost.

The atmosphere is serene.

The weather is biting cold.

The living  metabolism is defunct.

The business has shrivelled.

The enthusiasm has shrunk.

The  spirit has dampened.

There is uneasy calm.

It is  a preamble to depression.

Those three days.

My telephone cable got snapped on Saturday.

Excavation work was going on ,for laying some underground cable.

The workers, carelessly   gave a strong dug on the cable. leaving 150  telephone lines dead for almosr three days.  I  do not possess a mobile phone.

My work got paralysed, my contact with the outside world was almost nil.

I felt like Wordsworth’s “Solitary Reaper”.All alone, singing ,moving about in my garden reading my favourite books, listening to music, absolutely insulated from the  incessant jarring  my telephone emanated.

This lasted only for  a day.

My friends and well wishers, got  apprehensive and were upset, as to what had happened to me.

They called each other, but no one was able to give a tangent answer.

They ,then drew a master plan.

They grouped themselves into three. The first set, came to my house, the next morning, .They hesitated near the main gate, They slowly  pushed it without making the least noise,, usually my gate creakswhen it is pushed with force, moved silently through the pathway, and reached the main door. blissfully ,reading the newspaper.

The front  door was slightly ajar. They peeped through, but unable to find any human activity. Their heart was pounding. Perhaps, they thought that I must be dead. Then mustering courage , they took a step further, crossed the main door. The suspense was too much for them.Visibly moved and with fear in their eyes, they made way to the living room.

My divan was facing the wall. The room was still and silent. It was also chill, cold and damp ,because of the heavy rains .

They came close to my reclining divan.Once they spotted my straightened  legs, their courage disappeared, their heart sank,. With shaky movements they  advanced. I was engrossed in the newspaper. I  was not at all aware of the motions around me.

Seeing my comfortable posture, my friends let out a shriek. I jumped out of fright and got on my toes, my hands were searching to find  a stick to guard myself from unforeseen attacks..

I broke into laughter, when I saw the group.

My giggle was uncontrollable. My friends also joined me.

It looked as though they had rescued me from terrorists attack.

My phone got resumed just now.

Laugh Out.

Feeling melancholic,

Laugh out,

Experiencing isolation

Laugh out,

Getting panic,

Laugh out,

Nurturing frustration,

Laugh out.

Brooding the lost ,

Laugh out.

Calculating the cost

Laugh out.

Recollecting the past ,

Laugh out.

Envisaging the future,

Laugh out.

Accepting the fate,

A grand interview.

Interviews evolve  qualification.

The assessment of an individual is done by formal consultation.,which includes ,rating scales, self reports, personality inventories, projective techniques and behavioural observation.

Interview , encompasses personality appraisal, propaganda testing, public opinion poll and social methodology , according to Encyclopedia Brittanica.

A play school is conducting interviews for admission.

A 3 year old is subjected to such rigorous testing .

The child and her parents are called for an interview by the school, on a particular day.

Meantime , the parents give coaching to their child ,with such vigour and strictness.

The child is  compelled to learn the names of colours,to  decipher shapes, to identify animals, to count, to spell out the alphabets, to talk fluently, and behave like an adult.

The  kid, does everything ,as taught ,at home, but once it  gets into the school campus, it develops, a fear, ,a withdrawal emotion, gets puzzled, and makes a mess of the interview , much to the chagrin of the parents.

The child’s admission is a big question .

The parents  admonish the poor child  for its breakdown.

A child , is like a petal , when handled roughly, it gets dishevelled and disoriented.

Education should not be a compulsion, but a reverberation.

It should enlighten  and enliven both the teacher and the taught.

It should be an interesting programme, a pleasant syllabus, and an enthralling edifice.

Will the schools stop  conducting  interviews?

Will they focus on educating the young mind?

Will they refrain from  replenishing their kitties, by levying exorbitant fees.?

Formulating a Young mind , is an honourable task, a selfless service, a pleasurable experience, and a god sent blessing.

Mumbai Endangered.

Mumbai ,is most prone to terrorists attacks, bomb blast. There was a seige of explosions and firing , on Wednesday ,26/Nov/2008.

Hotels, Hospitals, were the targets of the offenders.

Mumbai is still burning.

The imperious Taj ,is on fire.

The hostages are mostly foreigners.

The common man ,is at risk, to cross the roads., to go to hospitals, to  proceed to the office, to venture out to buy vegetables and grocery.

Children  are groping in fear.

The big question in our mind is not ,What will happen tomorrow? ,but what will happen the next minute.

Today, Mumbai has woken up , from its disturbed sleep.

Tomorrow , it will resume its activities.

Can we call it stoicism ? or shall we term it helplessness.?

Life goes on.

“Men may come ,

Men may go,’

Mumbai goes on forever .

Mumbai can be affably addressed as “No boy”- no nonsense boy.
