Karunanidhi In A Cosy Bed.

Karunanidhi has created a gibberish sensation. He came back  to Chennai , with a feigned disappointment. He made Manmohan and Sonia Gandhi talk to him ,as if he is not intersted in joining the cabinet.. He posed himself to be self sufficient and effective. He got admitted in the hospital for acute back pain, which was due to his sojourn in Delhi. He convened an executive committee meeting of his party, then cancelled it , saying that he got an emergency  call from Manmohan Singh. Finally,  he has agreed to join the cabinet, with three cabinet ministers, and three state ministers. His son Alagiri is to don the robe as a minister of an important portfolio. His daughter kanimozhi , is also in the list. What a finale to the political melodrama. He has pleased his two wives, by putting his outspoken son from the first wedlock in a high pedestal, and alloting a berth to his vivacious daughter  from the second combination.

A Tamil saying reads thus , manalai kayiraga thirikalam. Yes ,the ailing octogenerian has spun yarn out of sand. The grand old man, has  converted politics into a lucrative business, He has  transformed multiple marriages into multifold progressions. He has churned family into an industrial venture. He has installed his  children  in exalted posts. He has earned revenue as a writer, as a producer of films, as a  major stakeholder of a Telivision channel,Sun T.V ,as a founder of a brand new Telivison channel, Kalaingar. But his main role is in politics. It has rewarded him the most. His consolidated net income from his investments is nothing compared to his invisible kickbacks from politics.

The  family of Karunanidhi , is blessed twice.  Primarily, they have a solid fallback, a mountain of funds to recline, a storehouse of properties to languish. Secondly , they have an enviable control over the central government, by occupying vital ministerial berths and a full sway over state politics.

The people have  endowed the aged man, with honour and fortune in a beautiful platter. The astute statesman has diverted this opportunity to enrich his family. The hope of the electorate was, that they would receive better service and best possible  development in the areas of education, agriculture, industry , health, infrastructure. But, as usual , they have to count the not laid eggs in an empty basket.A strain of murmur is faintly heard. A grunting sigh is vaguely felt. But ,no, a voice cries from the widerness, “Karunanidhi is sleeping in a cosy bed.Do not disturb”.

“Let you take rest, Old man, You have accomplished your duty for the day.”

Keep A Lid On It

Keep a lid on it is a fascinating idiom, inclusive of all effective temperaments. It is a relative terminology , befitting all periods , brandishing all  products, enfolding all segments, wielding all systems.

Oil is silently going up. It  has reached 60$. The expectation is th

at it will rise up to 75$. But the weak economy is keeping a lid on it, thus retarding its hasty climb.

Gold had a unprecedented hike . It soared and surged, baffling human  etymology. But there was a smart disposal of gold by Indians ,who have a special attraction to the metal. This has made the bullion merchants raise their eyebrows. Again the principle of Keep a lid on it comes handy.

The stock markets saw an awe inspiring mandate a few years back. The sudden leap was dismantling , and dis proportionate. But it kept on shooting up. When it was about to boil over , the policy of Keep the lid on it started its shift. The frothing diffused , diluted and became  a filtered residue  of its copious overflow.

The jobs in the Information  sector had a magical maddening aperture. The young software professionals were much in demand. Their earnings were erroneously wholesome. The  infusion of  extrempore riches jckd up their status . They lost their heads, by giving way to un principled lifestyle and misconstrued the privileges  handed over to them. The outsourcing industry , was badly hit by the recession, thus the Keep alid on it was enforced. The thriving  society was shaken ubexpectedly. The reality has woken them up to the snaguinity.

Keeping a lid on it , is a remarkable theory that has lot of endowments to be practised. It  is an alarm that signifies  prudence and alerts us when we tend to indulge in lavish  spending, liberalised life style. It stops us when we incline to stray away from dogmatic implications and plunge into instigated horror.

Political Volcanoes

Volcanoes erupt emitting fire and heat. They let out gas ,hot molten rock ash.

The political volcanoes of  recent times, are  the Taliban in Afghanistan, the Liberation Tigers in Sri Lanka, the Iraq conflict ,to name a few.

The Talibans ,are a ruling faction Of Afghanistan. Their rule was conspicuously marked for the treatment of women. The intervention Of U. S added fuel to the fire. There is an excessive case of damage ,emphatic turmoil , and unnerving deaths.

The Liberation Tigers Of Eelam, as the  Tamils of Sri lanka, term themselves . are fighting for a separate country based on the language. They had relentlessly been fighting for  33 years. What started as a demonstration for equal rights , has crystaslised into a controversial military hampering. In the years , there was a large scale exodus to India , Canada, Britain , France an Malaysia. There was also a predominance of casualties on both sides,  that of life, buildings and peace.

The Sri lankan  volcano has erupted finally with the death of LTTE  leader Prabhakaran. It must have been a gruesome confrontation. The people of the island crave for normal life . Not a day passes without the sound of the guns.

The  Iraq war has many conspiracy theories.George Bush invaded Iraq , for combating terrorism and also for U.S dominance over oil. The second reason may sound erroneous, but there is a little truth also. The war , has sacked Saddam Hussein, has disturbed the tranquillity  of the region, and has resulted in enormous bloodshed.

Political Volcanoes  are much more severe than natural Volcanoes. Nature’s fury is beyond our control. But this man made aberrations could have been easily halted , in their initial stage , if the concerned , had considered liberalisation. Letting a fair deal is  a sign of understanding, a signal of  compassion and a significant reaction to violence.

A smile litters the mind. A sincere attempt reinforces the foundation. Swelling pride and serpentine endeavours have  shrouded the  frequent negotiations. The net outcome is bloodshed.

The Best Quench Thirster

Beat the heat with this simple beverage. It is the best, and cheap concoction , that can be prepared at home in a few seconds. It suppresses dehydration, and  rejuvenates the body .

A small quantity of tamarind has to be soaked in water for a few seconds. Then extract the juice ,to the full. Add  powdered jaggery, and ginger extract . Flavour it with  finely powdered cardamom. Chill it. If you do the preparation in a mud or clay pot, the effect will be superb.

The scorching heat, makes you mad. it drains you off of all your energy. It  renders you waned and exhausted, The chronic perspiration will drive you out of tune. The fatigue  compels you to sit at home. They induce you to utter grunts and  grudges . The body starts aching for no reason whatsoever. The mind loses its repertoire. You become a sneaky snail, a spent buff, a lethargic entity, and a useless brat.

Such a  kind of uncompassionate  disintegration could be well brought into focus by takina  asip of  the prescribed drink. It soothens your dry throat, cools your tract, cleanses your intestines, kindles your kidneys, emulates  the blood flow in the arteries and refills the lost water content in the body.

A wholesome consumption of the  reverberating mixture will wrench wonders to the body and the soul. This is a grandmother’s recipe for summer . It is aptly called as Panakkam. The tamarind juice  acts as a  cathartic, astringent, laxative, and refrigerant . The ginger extract relieves nausea, vomiting, and mitigates arthritis pain.Jaggery is called as medicinal  sugar. It clears lung and throat infection and is a rich source of iron.Flatulence and indigestion are expelled from the system., by consuming cardamom , which  also acts as a stimulant.

Santhamu lethu, saukiyumu lethu . goes the maxim.

True , external factors like  horrid weather sucks the  body’s temper, which in turn forces you to act tangently, which leads to a sickness and unpleasantness. The permanent cure for such irritable syndrome is in this panakkam.

Wage Cut

The economy is re bouncing. Dow jumps. The soaring of share in dices is spectacular. The recession is slowly fading.  These sentiments send signals of happiness. There is a  spread of warmth and submissive look up.

The other side of the coin presents a grim, glum   efficacy. There is a predominant wage reduction in all segments ,and in all countries over the world. Wage cut does not impress a robust economy. When the going is good , there will not be any thought to scale down the pay. As  the administration envisages a shrink in its profit, it tightens its purse. Employees , do not shift jobs or retort against the down scaling ,for fear of not finding a suitable opportunity. This again  tells us about  the weak economy.

The slimmer pay packets bring wih them another baggage of woe. The mortgage  crisis falls heavily on the shoulders.Less pay indicates difficulty to pay  interest, which at  anyday will not go down.  Saving becomes a remote possibility ,as there is cut in wages.. Spending also loses its glamour , as there is no or less money in hand.. The chain of vicious sequences, right from wage cut, mortagage , saving , spending , illustrate the regiment we are in.

The economy will be levelled before this year is out. This is the prevelant hope .But the thorn in the bush is the rising unemployment. Stabilising the economy is a welcome step indeed. But ,creating jobs , is most imminent , to resurrect  the dangling economy. If this not given acute attention, then there is all pssibility of the economy taking a reverse course.

Nations should direct their steps to stimulate the economy, by augmenting jobs, by diffusing stagnation and arresting deflation.

Abusing Society.

A society  is a group of humans. It is an economic, social, industrial infrastructure made up of a varied multitude of individuals. There is a subtle difference between society and culture.. Society is a disciplined arrangement of social relations, while culture is made up of beliefs and symbolic forms.

The distinction  in various  classes of  society, the disharmony in behaviour of  a different strata of society , that of the powerful and the powerless, rich and the poor, the discrimination of old and young, the alienation of the physically challenged  pose an abusive threat to society.

A  news clipping of a Passport issuing officer’s misuse of  her authority is amazing and nauseating at the same time.. She makes Rs  5millionper month ,by issuing emergency passports under the Tatkal scheme,  forming a nexus with a travel agent . She runs a parallel office in her home. The  CEO is  her husband, a nephew, of a Minister. This reflects the abuse of bureaucracy.

The next issue ,is the arrest of the former chairman of a nationalised bank, for sanctioning a loan to the most undeserving customer. The Chairman, it is rumoured acted on the behest of a powerful politician, now dead.It is an incident of a  thorough misuse of the high office

The third episode is a most interesting. The highly melodramatic event stunt is the fasting schedule of the Chief Minister of Tamilnadu. He motored to the Marina , in the early hours , was wheeled to the portals of the Anna Samadhi. There was hushed buzz and a swished bustle. He was followed by his wife, his mistress, his paramour, his daughters, sons and nephews, along withe the batch of officials , all assembling at the wee hours , as the Chief minister is to undertake  fast against the military excess of the Sri Lankan government. A cosy cot was rolled over, and the Chief minister was placed in the bed, with his near and dear ones hovering over him. News flashed all over the state. His party men made similar feat in all major cities and towns. Television channels brought live relay  and in a matter of six hours , the chief minister has ended his fast, as the Central government prevailed over its counterpart to stop the war. What a colossal waste of money, time , energy and  abuse of administrative machinery .This is an outrageous attempt to brandish the super power wrested on the Chief Minister.

These are the most recent incidents that created a cumbersome apprehension  and a strangling evidence  that mar the society, corrupt the mind and disenchant the society .

The Two Decades

Looking back is a an engaging pastime for me. It is not the literal  turning around , but the retrospection that holds my attention .Recollecting the past events, is an interesting and a hand on experience. I stand a little apart ,and gaze in wonder ,as how I tackled the  situations ,as how I emerged  successful in all my endeavours. Behind all these trials  are a series of struggles , a pack of sacrifices, a pile of humiliations, a  load of mockery , a collection of losses ,and  a heap of perfidy.

The past two decades were a stifling suffocation. My kids were my prime concern. Three boys ,in eight years ,was a dazzling proforma. They were impish at a time and very responsible at another period. They made no serious effort in their early school days. All the three, took things as they happened. They were always in the garden, shouting , playing, cricket one day, football another day and tennis the next morning. The lawn , which was neatly mowed and kept in perfection, would look  torn  and tattered , much to the agony of my old gardener. Not a day passed without breaking of glass panes, and bulbs in the garden .The  whole compound would be strewn with bats, balls ,socks and shoes. Rearranging them was an absolute threat.

The ordeal of bathing them and bringing them to the desk was an extra strain . I used to have severe heart attacks. There is a belief ,that a person  can withstand three infractions. But I have  survived hundred of such attacks, and still going strong. Putting them in the wheel was an arduous task , but I managed. The eldest will have  doubts in Algebra, the second will be doing his  English homework, and the little one half asleep will be counting the numbers. I was a three in one teacher, and coped up with this exercise comfortably.

As they reached the middle school level, each one slowly became studious, much to my amazement. Their border line pass, became a distinction . When they stepped into he high school , it was such a smooth transition, they rose to the top rank. The graduation and the post graduation were a simple jump for them They bagged gold in their masters. They chose different fields, business administration, journalism and advertisement. They are making waves in their areas,. They are excellent in their jobs and have registered a tremendous sequence in their avocation.

I had set aside  all my passions, my interests, my socialiing  for the sake of my children. The writing skill, in me .was dormant all these twenty years. The inclination towards music , which I learnt during my young age ,was shelved . I was not myself. I was primarily a mother, nothing else crossed me, nothing else intercepted my thoughts, nothing else disturbed my composure.

After ,they have taken off , the I in me is surging and raising its head. I try to put it down , by mumbling , that the remaining years would provide a platformto perform and enumerate my talent.

Security And Scepticism

Security is mortals chief enemy says Shakespeare in Macbeth.A Machiavellian hero Macbeth, feels very insecure towards the end of the play. He ,who slew many, who treacherously deceived everyone, and who felt that he was the King of Kings, spent sleepless nights, bemoaned that the waters of the ocean were not enough to wash the blood from his hands. The delineation of the titular hero by Shakespeare is beautiful and slowly unfolds the character of Macbeth. The tempo is exhaustively firm, the thoughts of the protagonist is carefully unravelled and the tragedy is slowly laid bare .

Right , a similar incident took place  in the circle of my relatives. This man is not a King , but thought himself to be so. He is from an affluent family, possessing properties of worth, and investments in stocks. Not only he, but his father and siblings , talk in millions, think in billions, and imagine in trillions. In reality ,he lived not in modest habitation but very ordinary houses, with less amenities and no comfort. But he  made a propaganda of his wealth , in  a loudest manner. His prattle came to an end ,when one fine morning he disclosed, that he had loaned a half a million $ to his client for an interest of 18%. His client has not repaid the loan ,nor given interest for five years. The man who has taken the advance ,has totally failed and refuses to give. My friend has made many a mistakes like this represented case ,and feels very insecure. Is he not a faint resemblance of Macbeth?

Scepticism , is another quality that needs a keen research. Scepticism is suspicion or indecisiveness. Why does one becomes irresolute, because the scepticism in him is irking him. Shakespeare  comes with a famous character of Hamlet. To be or not to be , the lines  interpret Hamlet’s mindset. His suspicion  leads him nowhere. and the tragic  efficacy  fervently en wraps the  scene. Opportunities are lost, and the essentials go amiss. Chaos and confusion prevails.

Now , there are many Hamlets ,in reality. Again capturing an episode nearer home, I bring to the table another relative, who spoiled the wealth and reputation of the family by his scepticism. He , unexpectedly , got charge of the reins of the family business. He lost his head, and manged the affairs without trusting his own siblings, his managers, and the deputies who had assisted in the growth of the business. He suspected the financial institutions, felt wary of the auditors, withdrew from  right minded people, shunned old time affliates and changed lawyers .He mismanaged the entire business. The family has  lost everything, name ,fame and finance. Is he not a replica of Hamlet?

Shakespeare has made a thorough study of men, their mind and their idiosyncrasies.  Many centuries after, we find men of identical  qualities.
