Singapore-Clean eh!!!

The encircling air around Singapore is highly polluted. The atmosphere resurrects a complexity in breathing. The environment is like most of the other  countries, posing a mild threat to nature. The ad prop litter free is a a malapropism. The streets are strewn with thin garbage bags, cigar butts, and disposable paper cups and plates. The penalty for being unmindful to cleanliness is 150 Singapore dollars. In spite of this heavy dose , I saw many incidents which impress ill on her surroundings.

First, I reconciled myself saying that I am in the midst of Jalan besar,in the criss cross junction of Serangon Road, and Orwell road, where coffee shops, eateries, and provision stores abound. But , later chided myself ,telling me that the most populated areas, should be the most well kept ones. A slight negligence  has set in, I feel. The sanitary and health authorities need to take special attention to keep the area safe for tourists. The quality of food served in these restaurants are far below the standard. The Plates and cups are cleaned ,but not to the appropriate levels. There is a fallback in the monitoring of the day to day to management by the civic body. I was frozen , when I saw large cubes of ice being unloaded from a lorry, and to make matters worse , the huge blocks of ice were hammered with iron rods. The ice finds its way into the restaurants as to chill the fresh juices and milkshakes.I resolved not to take any chilled juices till I leave Singapore.

The aftermath ,of a week in Singapore ,was a thoroug  run own.I was down with high fever, result of   severe abdominal upset. The sensitive intestine suffered very badly. I had nausea, vomiting ,and delirium set in. My physician was confused ,as to what have I contracted from Singapore. My breathing slowly turned to be heavy. I was subjected to incessant cough.I was whooping for a normal breath. My fever raged unabated. I could not swallow a spoon of water. I compelled myself to an ounce of hot milk.Out came the flow of liquid, with such force, that I stood terrified. What is going to happen to me?I chose a place , for a week halt -Singapore, a safe haven for travellers. But the experience I got ,is nightmarish. If it had been any other country, I would have taken safety measures, to keep me away from such relevant flaws. Just ,it happened to be Singapore, I took it easy, and I am paying for my light heartedness now.

I am still in the veil of exhaustion. My mind is absolutely empty ,as I find myself hard to cope up with my physical  depletion..A week in Singapore has cost me heavy, both financially and physically. The financial part can be earned. The disarray ,I experienced all this fortnight will leave me a wreck for months to come. Am I entitled to any compensation from the Singapore Government? If so ,inform me, I would gladly accept it

Lessons From The Past.

Learn from your elders, listen to your elders, and live like your elders are the three principles to be  followed by modern day youth to regenerate Nature.

A quarter of a century back , the intensity of life , was immense that each and every happening was twined with Nature. The fashion of plastic , the usage of polythene bags, the disposable polyurethane cups , and plates  had not come into existence.

Each house had earthen pots and large brass vessels to store water.Shopping bags were made of cloth or jute. Large quantities were bought in sacks woven with jute. Cement was packed in a special categorised sack, also of jute. Cups and saucers were of chinaware,or glass, which when broken or when they become too old could be thrown out ,as they were easily degradable. or made of metal like stainless steel, which could be recycled

In parlours and hotels banana leaves  were used to serve food, and other side dishes were served in cups made of palm leaves . They were in course of time replaced by stainless steel plates , cups and tumblers. The plates , cups and tumblers were cleaned and reused. The banana  leaf culture, I understand was the best proposition , as it needs no cleaning, just dumping into the garbage and shoved over. This incurred less or nil water consumption. Another additional benefit was the cleaning efficiency need  not be supervised.

There was store of such vessels in almost every household, as they were required for marriages and other big functions. After every celeberation, the lady of the house , saw to it that all the cooking utensils, serving dishes, were cleaned thoroughly not once but thrice, dried with huge towels, kept in  bright sunshine , then meticulously arranged in the store rooms. After keeping them in order, long pieces of cloth were spread over them to keep away the dust and mites.

There was also a big chest of drawers , filled with carpets , that were used during the weddings. They were ordered to fit the halls of the houses, the raised platforms or thinnais . The colours and designs were matching to the flooring and the paint of the wall, where they were spread. The characteristic peculiarity of each family was illustrated in the combination of colours, in the weaving of designs, and in the selection of utensils. They were a phenomenal array of grace ,distinctive display of choice and  an exposition of chaste  , beautiful illustrations. Once the function got over, these carpets , rugs  were brushed with assiduous attention, with a wet cloth first , then with a dry one, then laid bare to the sun for a few hours. This exposure to the sun acted as a disinfectant . Finally they are folded , and placed in the chest of drawers specially made for them.

These regularities have become   an anachronism in the fast world. Now , we can hire carpets, pillows . rugs, utensils, and even procure ready made food without igniting the stove. This is surely a degradation , not only of nature , but also of self .Using things again and again, that too utilised by the majority pose a severe threat to health.

Wiping And Cleaning

The possibilities of keeping the environment fully well in a designed and disciplined framework looks remote. The defamation to the healthy atmosphere is man made , in the sense it is wantonly committed  and purposefully devised.

The  apparent job of cleaning the house , is  a simple  work ,which needs no special skill and no mental  acumen. The way ,it is carried out requires  a proper procedure. The dust , the rubbish and the cobwebs that are collected should go to the bin , but we throw it out in the streets , unmindful of the mess it causes, immediately and in the long run, Most countries take severe action to this gross violation, but in India , it is a casual incident. Most house  fronts are swept  clean, then water is poured , again it is  swept dry . Then the traditional sketches or kolams are drawn , giving a gleeful look . This sweeping is confined to the front part only, leaving the thither sides totally in the lurch. The Indian mindset ,” is keep your house clean , do not think about the inch of land which does not belong to you.” Let it gather dust , let it be strewn with plastic carry bags, let it hold a garbage of waste that cannot be easily  destroyed, the Indian is not affected. He feels that  it is not his duty , it is the job of the city  corporation

The capricious thought seems so strange and so weak at the same time. The  indiscriminative process leads to a prosaic perishable derogation. The garbage starts stinking , if it is drenched by rain. It starts flying , when it faces a strong wind.  The  large deposit of waste mounted for a long duration ,starts the spreading of infection  of multifarious bacteria . Most illness are air borne , and waterborne. The hazard , thus created , leads to ailments , like asthma, jaundice, hepatitis , allergies and influenza.

The narrow perception of maintaining cleanliness at home , is ridiculous and painful at the  same time. The ridicule emanates from the short listed constrained refinement of the insensitiveness to the jeopardy it causes. Abstaining from the general welfare but involving in the particular  sensibility, shakens the vulnerability of the environment. A desire   to enunciate a method to wipe  and clean without harming the larger significance of  environment by pollution and combustion, emission and exhaustion should be nurtured , if we wish to protect the planet.

Looking Around

Looking around I find,

A multitude of races,

With different faces,

In a close bind.

Looking around, I see

A column of fame

With varied  name,

In an erect tee

Looking around , I perceive

A show of finesse,

With exhibits of niceness .

In a display conceive.

Looking around, I gather,

An innumerable babble,

With noisy preamble,

In a chaos rather.

Looking around, I muster,

A succinct texture,

With lively culture,

In a strange batter.

Looking around, I admire,

A plethora of grace,

With excessive trace,

In a glowing desire.

Looking around, I feel,

A gusto of amity

With lovely brevity,

In an adroit heal.

Looking around, I experience,

A breeze of  kindness

With  nitty firmness,

In natural defense.

Looking around , I achieve,

A programme of bliss,

With celestial kiss,

In heavenly weave.

Malaysia’s Contribution To Environment

Malaysia is a beautiful country, rich in natural resources, and with profuse water flow.It holds an enviable status in South East Asia. The small country ,has a mutli culture population, of Malays, Chinese and Indians.

The three Asian races have mixed so well except for a few simmering here and there. I had taken a second home visa, and am constantly visiting the country for the past two years, rather ,I spend  nearly half a yearhere..

The weather is humid and moist. The rains are so copious and  the heat so oppressive , and sweltering , that the people seem to get scorched , but very soon  get drenched in rain. This in short is the characterstic of Malaysia,  with refernce to climate  in particular and with people in general. They may , at times be offensive, but shortly turn out to be so amiable and affectionate.

The roads Of Malaysia , need a special mention. They are so good and well maintained, that driving is a pleasure in this country. Even the roads in Kampam, and small towns are practically fine and devoid of potholes and speed breakers.

The carry bags strewn around , present an eyesore . The garbage is collected in a plastic bag and kept in front of every house, shops and hotels. They are cleared by the civic authorities late in the night. A significant move by the municipalities, but if they ban the use of these plastic garbage bags, the mother earth would be more grateful to the otherwise clean Malaysians. The supermarkets, big shopping malls, and the rehats, and hotels, invariably pack the things in coloured bags, plastic , of course. They may argue , that the thin bags are reusable, but why give way to it, when there are other alternatives. The shopping centers , could bring in thin cloth bags, or paper bags, or else bamboo baskets for heavy purchase.

This is what was practised during our grandmother’s time. The granny used to take a big bamboo basket ,to buy vegetables and big cloth bags to purchase cloth and dress materials. Grannies took food in banana leaves, which were easily decomposed. The big suitcases are the fancy of the modern age. In yore, the people took their belongings in baskets of bamboo or thatched leaves and bags made of cloth. They were easily manageable, though looked less attractive.

Going back to the basics , will save the earth from vicious  existence. We will leave a greener earth to our progeny, let alone anything else. The rich soil is the most precious gift to our children , than diamonds, gold , silver, and other movable and immovable assets.

Will Malaysian civic authorities give a thought to it? I pray that they should implement this concerned perception as early as possible.

Defying Nature.

Nature never betrayed the heart that loved her-calls Wordsworth.

Man defies the beauteous forms, wrestles against the purity of nature, embitters the sensation sweet and plays discordantly to dispel the music of humanity.

Nature ,constitutes the whole system of exixtence, forces and events of the physical world that are not controlled by human beings. When the mortals to overpower it , inconvenience, intemperance, and incoherence sets in.

The phenomenn of natural consequence gets jolted , gets arrested and gets thawarted  by man’s interference.

The unmindful felling of trees, the irrational destruction of forests, the unthinkable array of construction, the unlawful  high raised buildings, have resulted in a chaotic disturbance to nature.  These prologues have affected the climate, have messed up the rains, have led to eruption. Man stands at fault.

The designs of nature are also rubbed unnecessarily by us. Taking pills to postpone mensturation, adopting birth control techniques, consuming tablets to restore youth,to stimulate vibrancy ,will put us in a fix. Fatal disease ,like cancer will unassumingly creep into the system and play a havoc . Man , once again ,errs.

Chemical ffertiliser and manure do play a crucial role  in the  deterioration of the fields directly, and in the depreciation of health indirectly.. The fertility of the land is increased manifold by the application of such fertilisers, but the unusual fecundity depletes the soil and makes it a sordid land bereft of  glow and growth.

Consuming the vegetables, fruits, and grains subjugated to such predicament of treatment, poisons the human machination and falters the immunity. The system gets exposed to unreliable ,unwanted folios and suffers extreme pain and exorbitant impeachment.

Nature blesses the one, who adores her, who do not cross her, and who do not antagonise her.

Furniture Then And Now

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

Beauty is in all things.

Furniture add charm to  a house. It is the sofas, divans, the dining table , matching chairs, and cots add charm to the house,  which is otherwise a mere concrete structure. They personalise the house thus the word Home is acquired.

House denote a place of living. Home brings in the intensity of the living, the effervescence of life, the beauty is translated.

The furniture in a house reveal the mind of the possessor. It is not the money which shows your self. It is the taste, rather the chaste choice, the discreet selection, bring out the style in you.

A living room ,reflects the aesthetic sense of the occupier. The intricate designed settees, the matching centre table and the fitting flower decor brought a glow to the environ. The gleaming rosewood, the sparkling teak , or the majestic oak were carved and made into impressive sofas. They had a lovely upholstery which gave a grand portrayal. The dining table and chairs were equally royal and exhibited great elegance and style. The cots had a floral pattern encarved  in the bedsteads, and the fine wardrobes  displayed a fineness and grace.

Now these excellent art pieces have given way to plastic chairs and tables, compressed wood  articles-and wrought iron furniture,  which are easy to dismantle, easy to manage, easy to buy, because they are not expensive, easy to transport.

All these easiness are manifolded , but they lack the only one exclusive trait-beauty, little modified , homeliness. The new found are commercial and lack the cosy warmth that exudes in the wooden furniture.

The latest furniture are also not Eco friendly. They pose a threat to environment. They are not degradable, not digestible by earth. They are a perennial source of harm and disaster.

Rivers infused faith,

Rivers professed sanctity,

Rivers prompted  worship,

Now,

Rivers emante odour,

Rivers exhibit contamination

Plastic Everywhere.

Here a plastic, there a plastic,

Everywhere a plastic, plastic ,plastic,-goes the modern rhyme.

There was a convention in my neighbourhood.  The gathering were a batch of local environmental experts . The speakers were delivering speeches of how to prevent environmental damage.

Many reporters were jotting the main points , related to the issue.

My mind was raving about,as I had never been a proper listener. My eyes got stuck on the plastic podium, the plastic table with a plastic  vase adorned by plastic flowers. The table was covered by a plastic sheet.  Mineral water in plastic bottles were distributed to the  delegates to wet their throat.

The talk was going on,and speaker after speaker decried the use of plastic. I was amused. The situation and the core subject were  contradictory.

We dispersed for lunch. They had arranged a buffet. Hot soup was offered in a plastic cup. Plastic plates were  handed over to all of us.  We managed to push food with plastic spoons and forks. Then we moved to the wash basin to have a quick wash. Lo ! the  tap was a colourful one., made of plastic.

The afternoon session began, again there was a harangue about the demeaning qualities of plastic.

I could not control my laughter this time.

The message of  the convention  was lost. Talking one thing and doing the other.

My countenance changed into  plastic. My thoughts got stuck up like plastic.Plastic is overwhelming, as it is stepping beyond the approval limits.

The environment is the butt of such unmindful transgression.

Environmental Hazards

Navigating through a crowded street in my home town, I found the most detestable practices in its full form.

The street was a hub of trading activities,

Lorries and go carts  were plying up and down, unloading fruits, vegetables, coconuts and groceries.

The load men were spitting  on the road, the drivers smoking beedi and cigarettes, and the female vendors  also added to the disarray by spitting betel juice.

The whole area was messy, strewn with  vegetable left overs  The stray dogs and the loitering cows were having a sumptuous feast, feeding on the discarded vegetables and fruits.

Dogs looked shabby, with bruises all over and the cows were smelly and malnourished.

An important commercial area looked so ghastly and horrible.

Is it advisable to buy and sell the consumer goods in such a stinking unhealthy environment?

When complained ,the health authorities  turned  a deaf ear to the pleas of the citizens.

They are appeased by the handsome give outs by the shopkeepers.

In the milieu, individual satisfaction overwhelms collective discontent..
