Maunam

It is a day when my throat is out

speechless I am all through

now and then this happens

my throat goes out of order

people in my land,  India.

take a vow  not to talk

mostly on Thursdays

a day of the Guru.

call it as Mauna viradham

this they do with a determination

but to me, it is God Given

when I am down with a  bad cold

and incessant cough

my throat would get stuck

and I practise Maunam

A Call Out Of Curiosity

A call from a senior

early in the  morning

an enquiry about health

felt a cordiality in her voice

finally rested on a query a

my innocence is exploited

as usual by many persons like her

she comes up with  a curiosity

will, I participate in a function?

I smiled   and kept quiet

she knows well that I will not

why  does she put forth this question

I really do not know.

Like it–Haiku

Like it

the bird’s early morning tweet

being extremely sweet.

The Wheel Of Fortune.

The wheel of fortune
stays not in one place
turns as often as it can
brings a downturn unexpectedly
strikes an upswing unknowingly.
The wheel rotates on its own
waits for none in its course
the rich turn poor
the order reverses
it being governed by infinity
wheels towards infinity.

Worked on the poem The Wheel Of Fortune.

The original,

The wheel of fortune

turns with a will

the one up for a time

comes down for sometimes

change no one wishes

it happens whatever matters

round and round the wheel rotates

spins and revolves

leaving no time or any space

fortunate turns unfortunate

the rich become poor

a circulation compulsory

being   one of infinity.

Like to know from the readers which one is good ?

Please, let me know as I am preparing the manuscript.

Thanks,

Meena.

Election and Governance

Who governs the nation?

that is  not my botheration

I have my views  of governance

I go by a reference

not anyone can rule.

Happens so

a man with no education

rules not one term

is at the helm

for many terms

a disappointment sets in

the voters, at least the majority

take the money and vote

could be due to their necessity

blame none for  the state of affairs

people should learn  to vote

that will take time

till then I wish to go

with my work not bothered

about the governance.

The Keyboard Problem

I had a very unpleasant experience

my keyboard gave me a headache

I tried all possible ways

still I am not fully on the way.

The delete key  has stopped

does not delete at all

so does the backspace

does not go back .

Why did it happen?

I do not know. Sit with fingers crossed

Sit with fingers crossed

nay, fingers typing to find a solution.

The day passed without any  result

I hope, hereafter, I should learn to type

without mistakes and   flaws

a difficult task to achieve.

I misspell, go wrong in tenses

more on the punctuations

now, I have to be careful

till I get the keys right.

The Oil Bath.

As a girl, I sat on a stool

the ayyamma liberally smothered  sesame oil

on my head  and on my body.

The oil  was allowed to settle down. After fifteen minutes

she shampooed  my hair  with shikakai

and bathed  my body with the same powder

she poured  water boiled in a copper vessel

called vemba . Dried cow dung cakes were used as fuel

My mother took charge  of me  after the bath.

she dried the hair

by  lighting sambrani holders with coal

sprinkled  sambrani powder

a fragrance emanated. The hair  turned absolutely dry. Sambrani was used to

ward off cold attacks.

My mother tied my hair in  a loose knot.

Oil baths were on  Tuesdays and Fridays

not a week passed without this ceremonial bath.

ayyamma — nanny.

sambrani— Benzoin resin.

vemba— vessel used to boil water

Miss. David –My Teacher.

It is a retrospection

back to the days of my childhood

remember Miss. David

a burly woman with powerful glasses

screwed up my ears when I misspelt

caned me if I went wrong in the tenses

gave a kuttu in my head

if I added wrongly

held me close to her bosom

If I recited my multiplication tables correctly

It was a rigour more of  in a kind

was also fun in a way

learning under supervision

not an ordinary one

one with punishment immediate

had a bonafide result

Rains are in a Swing

The rains are in swing

the reptiles and insects

have taken their wings

find  them in all sections

snails  crawl in the backyard

frogs  hop almost everywhere

needless to say about lizards

the fly flies in and out without any care

bothersome it is to keep them off

rains do bring relief to all

they do create a havoc in their first call.
