Crime Wave in Malaysia

Article first published as Crime Wave in Malaysia on Blogcritics.

Malaysia is in the grip of fear. Fear emanates not from external bodies, not from invasions, not from economic constraints, not from internal troubles, but from petty thieves. It sounds ridiculous and silly, but it is very much the case.

Burglary has become a part of Malaysian life. Newspapers report episodes of daylight robbery and incidents of housebreaking as headlines.

These miscreants indulge in snatching chains, rings, pocketing money, stealing credit cards and mobile phones. If anyone resists, the thieves turn violent. They slit open the throat or cut the fingers with sharp penknives and bolt away.

They decamp with cash and jewels from townhouses and private residences. As most Malaysian buildings have tiled roofs, the thieves easily remove the tiles and get into the main living area. They warn the inmates of dire consequences they will have to face if they report the robbery to the police.

Temples also get looted by these burglars, who enrich themselves by grabbing expensive ornaments made of gold and studded with valuable diamonds. On their way out they lift the lockers filled with devotees’ contributions.

There is still another way of stealing: small-timers rummage through plantations and harvest fresh fruit and bunches of oil palm and sell it for immediate cash.

The police patrol the vulnerable areas on motorcycles and in cars, flashing a bright light and honking frequently. They do only that much. It is a stylish way of going about the town with authority and power, but it does not catch criminals or mete out any punishment.

This otherwise beautiful country with tropical rain forests and a long coastal belt, with a stable government, with a sound economy, with three races living in harmony, would compete for the safest place to live in if not for this glaring discrepancy

Fear surmounts

Woke up in the morning with panic,

Chaos  in the neighbour’s attic,

Everything was strewn around,

As nothing valuable was found.

Each one was analysing the possible  way

Every body was  giving out a solution  in a sway,

The neighbour stood gripped in fear,

Looking at the door in the rear.

It is easy to remove the tiles above

Stealthily  get down in an easy go,

It was skilfully planned and  undertaken,

Finally got muddled and  overtaken.

A wrong foot on the metal tin ,

Provoked a deafening din,

Enough to alert the inmates,

Awakening them to a checkmate.

The entrants made haste,

Collecting the available in a crate,

Their act released a fear,

Destabilising all to the barest bear.

Day in and day out,

Incidents  occur without doubt,

Sending signals of apprehension,

Placing everyone in a traumatic suspension.

The patrolling is very weak,

None are caught during the peak,

The Police let go the culprits free,

Inciting the citizens to keep a vigilant spree.

Theft and burglary have become common,

The local administration finds nothing uncommon,

Concentrating on charging the drivers for speeding,

The Police wantonly ignore the robbers of looting.

Governance is lacking  in district and state administration,

Right from the Clerk to the President  have their own disposition,

Taxing the people heavily for least dispensation,

Refuting to arrange for a simple protection.

Ignoring the thieves

The Dreaded Serpent.

The slithering snake  causes a fear,

As it hisses and heaves in the rear,

Pushing  out its tongue in a ghastly cheer,

The snake moves stealthily  over the steer.

Gliding across the sandy trowels,

The serpent sheds its skin in the shovels,

It effortlessly races ahead of all levels,

Gobbling the  frog in an unexpected  shrivel.

The caught shudders  and wrenches,

Unaware of its fate in the trenches,

The other frogs  jump over the bunches,

Forcing an escape from the serpent’s clutches.

Serpents, if beaten ,cast a spell,

As the Hindu mythology  tries to tell,

It rings  an unbelievable bell,

Blind faith ,at times , creates a hell.

Nature Has its Way

Defying Nature is irreverence,

Beware Of nature’s wrath

Destroying  Nature is  transgression,

Fear Nature’s  fury,

Deriding Nature  is sacramental,

Keep away from Nature’s anger.

Nature has  its own way,

Care and destruction  occur in a sway,

Remitting a fondle and a raid,

Extending an embrace and a tirade,

Holding up the righteous and good,

Deleting the indecorous  and bad.

Nature has its own way,

Dealing with ailments in a  fray,

A leaf dispels upsets in a quickness,

A shrub dismisses  pain in a  raciness,

A bark disproves strain in a firmness,

Curing all setbacks  without a suspense.

Nature has its own way,

Revenging  the teasers in a  day,

Ravages the land with indignation,

As it enacts a river’s spate,

As it fumes into a volcanic  irate

As it devours all in a stormy agitate

Threats in an Unknown Land.

Living away from home is a strain,

It is nevertheless an exhaustive drain,

Enduring the solitude  with a decorative feign,

Days roll slowly without any gain.

Adding up to the misery of living  away

There arises  series of threats every day,

The burglary in the neighbourhood  keeps  us at bay,

The murder in the marketplace turns us gray.

Holding the breath  with great fear,

Panting heavily in a desolate gear,

Hiding with  concern in the rear,

Waiting for the ultimatum in a shaky queer.

To gather courage one needs steps severe,

To face the threat  one requires boldness near,

To thwart the  danger  one should possess bravery  dear,

To emerge successful one  should display strength revere.

Threats are   very much present at home too,

They do exist in the surroundings too,

But the solace of having the loved ones besides too,

Sends a plausible security with much trust too.

I Fear Dogs

Dogs are faithful to all,

They are fearful to me,

I had three dogs in all,

Which I got  as pups free .

Ampi  was  quiet and lovely

It was alert and happy

Never unruly but always friendly.

Yet I was afraid of   Ampi.

The second one lasted  a while ,

Got wayward and become bad,

With heavy heart banished it to an exile,

Yet  I  was scared of the lad.

Jeffrey  the last one of its kind,

To be reared at my house

Was a rogue and  rage blind,

A terror to  all without grouse.

Barking and snarling at strangers,

Charging and going around them,

Guarding them as a ranger,

Biting  them  at their first move glum.

All through its long innings,

It lived untamed and untrained,

At the sight of my boys started  grinning,

Nudging and nestling close as well-trained.

I fear dogs both at home and away,

Know no reason for my apprehension.

I feel it is an inborn  ,inherent fray,

Handed over to me  by ancestral inhibition.

Those Few Moments.

Saw  movements behind my glass door,

They  were  a fast speeding move on the floor,

The haste looked like a fleeing soar,

Quick as a wink the disappearance  marked a  four.

Opening the door ajar found no trace,

Upset over the vanishing blaze,

Stood mute overseeing the magical glaze,

Deliberating whether it could be an imaginative maze.

Closed the door with great  care,

Turned slowly from the specific fare,

But came to a standstill   by a frightening stare,

Eyes peering and peeping across in an inquisitive glare.

Shattered by the phantasy  so near,

Shaken by the proximity of the sight   to tears,

Legs dwindling in  absolute fear,

Drove an implication of  a deadly casting on the rear.

The popping eyes across the glass,

Pronounced a dreary flash,

Passing frictions on the adrenaline  class,

While deducing a palpitation in a bash.

Blaming  woefully the cruel destiny,

Unbolted the door  praying simultaneously  to the almighty.

Raised the   eyelids in panic  but watched in relief happily

As the  three boys and their dog  trotted   in imperiously.

Aggressive Speculation

This is going to happen cries the heart,

This will happen warns the mind,

Nay,it should not take place whispers the heart,

Yep, it will certainly dawn orders the mind,

The heart whimpers and  wails,

The mind guffaws and laughs,

It is heart breaking indeed!

It is mind-boggling  in fact!

Uncertainty claims the life,

Unusual fear fills the  heart

Making it suffer and derail,

 Casting a poignant shot,

Leaving an indelible mark ,

Pain settles in,

Finally taking the life out,

Throwing the heart into a jungle

Apprehensive Deliberations

What will be tomorrow?

Will it dawn ?

Will it set?

Will it work?

Will it bring cheer?

Will it  be disappointing?

Queries the pessimist.

The tone of not,

The sound of nay,

The inclination no,

The  wish not to,

The expectation must not,

Emanates from the hopeless.

The staggering thought,

The desperate review,

The desolate preview,

The uneasy calm.

The stifling throttle,

The sharp animosity,

Lends a suspicion.

The frozen silence,

The sickening hesitation,

The alarming sentiment,

The trembling fear,

The awkward disgust,

The dizzy nagging,

Renders a   pressure.

Living with such inkling,

Harbouring such  qualms,

Carrying such defaults

Navigating through such tides,

Negotiating such  tricky turns,

Demerits the meaning of life

A Midnight Call

The night was sombre and  still,

It was a dark and dreary  fill.

No stars to twinkle and  thrill,

Bereft of special  delight and frill.

The house  was in  a deep silence,

Everyone was asleep  by preference,

There was no possible reference,

But  there existed a plausible  observance .

Disquieting the  sullen  eloquence,

A shrill ring  triggered from a distance,

Awakening the household in deference,

Jolting everyone to incoherence.

Fumbling I make it to the phone,

Tumbling  I respond in a subdued  tone,

To   a shrill voice strange and  unknown,

While the caller  dropped the receiver down.

Cursing the  unfamiliar voice,

I go back  without a choice,

To my bed with no rejoice,

Seeking a fresh and  delicate invoice.
