Will My Dream Come True?

The world has in its expanse ocean, mountains and terrains. Men, animals, and reptiles occupy that available space both in water and land. Along with them trees and plants exist extending a habitat to insects and birds. A conglomerate of living organisms defining Existentialism to the word.

Literature is the one which is dear to my heart. The reading expands my thoughts and the writing extends my beliefs. Culture is the twin of Literature. Both grew in the past and grow now hand in hand. Their repository and depository enforce a travel to the realms of imaginative regimes.

Well, I dream of culture. Not only a dream, but an obsession which gnaws me with such a composure that I do not sleep without thinking of the cultural paradigms I experience knowingly or unknowingly.

I own a land of twenty-five acres on the outskirts of my city. It is with me for three decades now. In my prime years,  I manufactured yarn. Had to wind up when the industry was hit hard by the recession.

The land and the building lie vacant. In my travels abroad and during my visit to places in India, I saw many outfits where they promote culture. I really want to do one such project on my property.

The dream haunts me for years. I hatch propositions not once but a hundred times. The pity of it, they never see the light. It is not due to the deficiency in execution, but because of the paucity of funds I confront. I am not able to mobilise. I pause and drag.

In my dream trail, I start a school, being not a regular one, where the children learn by rote and write the examinations. It is a school where the children are let to play, chat, discuss and create. My school will not follow a curriculum, will not have a timetable , and books. Classes will not be segregated All the children irrespective of their ages assemble ,pursue their interest, read the book of their choice, go out , explore and then sit down to pen of what they went through the whole day.

Next , I want to build replicas of the homes of our ancestors. The Tharwad and the Nalukattu of the Kerala Namboodiris, the Mutham, and Thinnai of the Nattukottai Nagarathars of Chettinad, the Goan-style architectural homes and the Agraharams of the Brahmins.

The traditional arts are losing grounds. I like to revive them , bring out their significance  and place them in the entertainment programmes. I propose a schedule-  training on the folk dance of each state,  teaching the martial arts and  the culinary expertise of the communities in my Puradhana- the name of my dream project.

The age old method of pounding rice, sieving them, and the cooking utensils like the brass utensils, big and small, one used in the household and those needed for weddings and festivals should be displayed.  Thrilled would be the present generation.

The practice of extracting the oil by installing chakku or oil machines. A pair of Oxen is tied to the wooden frame and made to go round impelling the machine to rotate. As the rotation gains momentum the coconut filled in the chakku yields and the oil drips. A slow way but certainly a proven method which will ensure a freshness and the longevity of the oil. It is free of chemicals.

The Vedas, a treasure, passed on to us by the ancients are not taught. The Western influence dominates. Sanskrit is a divine language. It is dying. Catch them young strikes me at this juncture.
The younger kids with their memory fresh and enthusiasm overwhelming would in no time master the language under proper guidance.

Cultural Renaissance is my dream. It is not a one night dream but one of a decade.

The Greek And Hindus

There are numerous Gods

in the Greek and Hinduism cards

schedule one to create

another to destruct.

wonder  Gods destruct.

Found in both cultures

as they do nurture

a quaint abstraction

more or less a distraction

similaritiesinclined towards a reverberation.

Shiva in Hindu cult destroys

ignites his third eye  in a choice

Perseus grabs Medusa’s  head

rescues Andromeda

both versions excite  instead.

Countless other Gods they allow

one each, for the wind, the sea and love

chivalry, knowledge, diligence

call for deities in reference

Could be a sign of indulgence?

Zeus and Zephyr to name a few

Vishnu and Krishna take the cue

exalted and enhanced by glamour

along with the shield and armour

enliven themselves with their paramours.

Rituals and festivals abound

accompanied by deafening sound

the upbeat feel is absolute

the unshaken trust  turns resolute

enough to provoke an immolate.

Beliefs and virtues so dear

inculcate a thought of fear

to instil a discipline severe

shapes and figures were engineered

idolatry came to be revered.

Mythology has become a religion  in play

myths are now scriptures  in stay

Gods are in increase all through

penances are ascribed not in few

similarities keep us in blue.

Greek and Hinduism are ancient

their celebrations are fluorescent

talk about miracles in length  all-time

yet the two profess a strength fine

a marvel they are  with shine.

Age Picks up.

Met a lady a few months back
from an origin distant
naturalised with years
now in her ripe age
who had hitherto
been a practitioner
of local customs
as she had got married into
an unknown family of distinct culture
she in her active years was
a stickler to the conventions
as age is picking up
hasKerala woman by now gone back
to her native dress
comfortable in her attire
at home to speak her own language
looks as though she finds
a solace and ease all through
implies that whatever might be
the home is always sweet and close.

The Beginning and End.

The beginning of the day

marked with cheer and rigour

ends up in the evening

with a serene  feel and tired mind.

Every beginning starts with mirth

concluding with a misty exhaustion.

The wear and tear throughout

sucks our energy and liveliness .

The day is not exclusive

it being found in human experience too

with the youth  are always thriving

the  aged mostly  fall into decreasing strive.

The years of toil and experience

grant a wisdom and sobriety

they too greatly bring in

a fatigue and lethargy.

The sparkle and shine gradually fade

leaving a care and share in the go

lit with an overwhelming concern

accompanied by a consideration .

This is the way everything goes

that be of day and human

could that be to animals and trees

The Diamonds In Yellow Gold

The sparkling diamonds
cast in yellow gold
hold my fascination
for years long .
Designed with great care
with the four C’s prominent
the diamonds remain a treasure.
Not many could afford the lovely stones
but there is nothing wrong in admiring
while the whole world revels on it
with the young desiring to have a ring
that is worn during the weddings
give the twinkling stone a sentimental value.
Solemnizing the wedding with the beautiful ring
has become the custom of the west
while in the Occident or in the east
diamonds have a superior sway
as ear studs, nose rings and bracelets
and necklaces with startling pendents
make the bride’s jewellery collection
Mainly the Indians attach great significance
as ornaments are made of gold and diamonds
marking the status of the families
that get into alliance as most marriages
go by the arrangement of the parents
Still the weddings that take place in India
do get organised by the seniors
while the girl and the boy gracefully
get into the wedlock as per the wishes of elders
succeed in carrying the yoke with understanding.
Ldiamond necklaceately there is a significant rise in love marriages
with the proportionate break and divorce
which were once uncommon and unheard of in Indian culture.
The attractive diamonds has brought us to the culture
confirming its importance and richness in stature.

Eating The Cream.

Eating the cream
and leaving the pie
has been his habit
gulps every delicacy
as soon as it is laid
quickly and avariciously
This culture has been inbred
and he has inherited it
from his ancestors perhaps
I know not from whom
or is it his quality private
as the years have made him old .
lest, what a fool
am I to think like that
as he is a find
from the lower
coming from a family
which has money
but no culture
and added to that
ha has no basic education
to amend and go through
life in fashion. images (10)

Work Culture

Getting to work
has different looks.
Diligence is found in few
engrossment is seen in some.
Working with sincerity
is noticed in few
Doing it for the sake
is the attitude of many.
So goes the work
with a like and a dislike
with a compulsion to fulfil
where quality shrinks
and quantity overtakes
where pay packets play a role
and indulgence keeps out
seducing a withdrawal
and a thought to work
for the sake of it
working to keep the fire burning
for the reliability in society
together with the necessity for survival
and an edge over sustenance.

Crisis All Over.

Crisis is seen all over.

Economy has tossed over

Culture has been swept over.

Ethics is not to be found all over.

Unruliness exists all over.

Illegality is rampant  all over.

Violence spreads all over.

Filthy rich abound all over.

Powerful rule ruthlessly all over.

Righteous suffer miserably all over.

Yet the world revolves over .

As the crisis boils  over.

Ode To Chettinad

It is  a grand place forsaken ,

Countered by hot and arid weather,

A glimpse of the ruins lying in mounds,

Grips the heart to an untold  melancholic sound..

The ornate and frescoes lay exposed,

Scorching sun and dusty wind damage,

Intermittent rains and unmindful use destroy,

The massive structures look weird and poor like a broken toy.

The lovely porches and patios,

Once avenues of hospitality and gaiety

Stand  as remnants of past glory,

Covered with mites and  insects in a hurry.

The courtyards long and extensive,

Once a hotspot of revelry and weddings,

Remain as ghosts of their  self in hay days,

Encouraging a growth of moss and shrubs in a lay.

The doors with elaborate designs,

Speak volumes of the happenings  ,

Now stay shut under lock and key,

Effacing the memories of the mighty deed in a flee.

The huge heavy gigantic keys,

Made a clatter   while opening the doors,

Now rarely seen as there are none,

Wishing to get in and out  for fun.

The pillars of wood and stone,

Exhibit colours blue ,brown and black,

Seem to talk about the  rich heritage,

In a tone mild succumbing to the  ravage.

The locked mansions  remain in dark,

They hold large wealth behind the doors,

Enticing the thugs to loot the bounty

Leaving the rightful owner in penury.

The land is a home to philanthropists

Its speciality is  food and culture,

The marvellous  relics are now ruins,

Casting a disenchantment and despair fluent.

The Culture In An Individual

Culture is referred to as an ideal of individual human refinement, according to Matthew Arnold  English poet and essayist. It is a pursuit of total perfection.Culture is reflected in the figures of speech, in the images that make imagination possible,in the artifacts that we create, in the media in which we pour our expressions.

We are inclined to think that culture is embodied in songs, music, cuisine  films and dramas. These are external manifestations. The internal development ,the inner refinement, the intrinsic value of behaviour, attitude, taste and  speech  disclose true culture. It is the essence , the finest crystallisation of the ways of the people.

Culture is well exhibited in the modulation of the  voice. A soft sweet tone enhances the  personality. The aspect  is found in the  method of speech. A smooth and firm articulation lifts the image. The attitude  is reflected in  the gait. The impressive walk raises the appeal. The impression is delivered in the expression. A twinkling curious look adds charm. The bearing  is exposed in the dress. A neat  attire gives an efficient drift. The stead is portrayed in the posture. A good stance improves the quality. The manner  is depicted in the habit. A fine disposition recuperates convention.

Culture is  an outlandish  comprehensive model of impulsion. It distinguishes the ideal from the ordinary. It discriminates the excellent from the mediocre. It differentiates  beauty from the plain. It  contrasts homeliness from offensiveness. It discerns pleasant from hideous. It segregates embellishment from blemish. It sets apart amity from abhor.

Culture in an individual makes him an idealistic person. The spirit of the man is extolled.  The goal of his ambition is realised. The target of his  exaltation is achieved.

The World hails him as

Here lives a Man with soul so pure and so enlivened.
